GB Labs announces integration with Backblaze B2 cloud storage

GB Labs announces integration with Backblaze B2 cloud storage

GB Labs, innovators of powerful and intelligent media storage solutions for the Media & Entertainment industry, has added new integration with San Mateo-based Backblaze’s B2 cloud storage service.

For many years, Media and Entertainment companies have been utilising Cloud services to strengthen and streamline their backup and archiving strategies. What began as a simple backup to tape, became strenuously complicated with the widespread demand for 4K, UHD and 8K content. As media files became more and more sizable, so did the task of backing up projects – most of which were no longer able to be done during non-production hours.

With LTO-7 limited to a maximum of 300MB/s write, a different approach had to be taken. This came in the form of Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape (D2D2T) workflows, whereby the copy from online storage to near line storage could happen quickly enough overnight, and then the copy from near line to tape could take place at any time, freeing up online storage to continue production.

Intregration Backblaze

With the introduction of Cloud Services to Media Workflows, this rapidly evolved into a Disk-to- Disk-to-Cloud (D2D2C) / Hybrid Cloud Backup methodology that you can find in GB Labs SPACE, ECHO, FastNAS and EasyLTO appliance ranges syncing with their own Nebula service, Amazon S3, SohoNet, Dropbox and now...Backblaze.

GB Labs offer Hybrid Cloud Backup for users to replicate on-premise as a backup safety net, before pushing out to the Cloud with their unique Automation, Replication and File Manager workflow tools.

With the Backblaze B2 bucket, users can sync data up with GB Labs Replication or use Backblaze B2 as a source to replication down to local storage.

With GB Labs Automation in place, users can instruct their Intelligent Storage to watch a particular folder and ensure all files are copied or moved direct to their Backblaze B2 Cloud Service, Nebula, SohoNet, Dropbox or Amazon Cloud Service. Backblaze users can now archive rushes direct to the Cloud and get an email notification that this has been done successfully right through GB Labs Automation.

"GB Labs' solution is compelling because they are solving challenges that creative customers face. By integrating Backblaze B2 into GB Labs solutions, customers now have a simple and powerful way to extend their creative workflows to the cloud.”

Nilay Patel – VP Sales and Product

“GB Labs’ cloud integration can be used in our Replication, File Manager and Automation tools. Now working with Backblaze B2 gives our clients a very cost effective and highly flexible Cloud service. This not only boosts the GB Labs toolset, but also offers a very achievable Hybrid Cloud Backup plan (D2D2C) with Backblaze B2 and GB Labs’ CORE.4 OS.”

GB Labs to feature Mosaic and CORE.4 Lite at CABSAT 2020

GB Labs to feature Mosaic and CORE.4 Lite at CABSAT 2020

Stand G3-24, CABSAT 2020, Dubai: Leaders in intelligent storage solutions, GB Labs, will showcase its award-winning Mosaic automatic asset organiser and the new CORE.4 Lite operating system during CABSAT 2020 at the Dubai World Trade Centre from 28 March – 2 April.

The Mosaic asset organiser makes it far easier to quickly search for, retrieve, and view video assets. Mosaic automatically scans all inbuilt metadata and integrates it with AI tagging enabling the ability to store, catalogue and access assets with no need for manual intervention, making it a substantial time and money saver.

GB Labs new CORE.4 Lite operating system is a custom OS specifically designed to serve media files. Its high degree of speciality guarantees stable performance for every user, whether as workgroups or individuals, while maximising the efficiency of every disk.

A powerful new feature included with CORE.4 is Analytics Centre, a dashboard that runs in the background of GB Labs intelligent storage devices and continuously analyses the network, providing complete visibility of exactly how, and by whom, data is being used.

GB Labs CEO-CTO Dominic Harland said, “Read/write speeds are usually compromised by a misconfigured network, which wastes resources. But configuration issues can be difficult to locate and resolve manually. Analytics Centre automatically analyses the read/write process through the network with specially designed algorithms that identifies, locates, and suggests how to resolve any issues, often before they occur, thereby eliminating the need for painstaking manual intervention.”

GB Labs will also demonstrate how its proprietary Dynamic Bandwidth Control identifies and selects high, medium, and low priority users to guarantee that the storage system automatically adjusts to operate at peak performance for all.

According to Harland, “Dynamic Bandwidth Control makes storage malleable to ensure it can flexibly respond to changes in usage priorities without breaking. This is unique to GB Labs and can be implemented whether storage is in use by one user or an entire workgroup.”

For backup and archiving, the exhibition stand workspaces will be coupled with GB Labs EasyLTO, an easy-to-use, cost-effective, all-in-one, high-speed solution.

Finally, the company will also discuss the success of recent GB Labs deployments to new customers including M for Media; Qatl Al Youm TV; Polimer TV; Craft; Kalvi TV; and Madha TV.

GB Labs can be found on Stand G3-24 throughout CABSAT 2020.

The GB Labs FastNAS F-16 Nitro system installed at M for Media by MediaCast can be accessed by up to 10 users of Avid Media Composer, simultaneously if required.

M for Media, an Abu Dhabi-based media production house, which produces TV shows and adapts international formats for the GCC and MENA region, has installed GB Labs’ FastNAS shared storage system. GB Labs develops intelligent storage solutions for the media and entertainment industries. The system was supplied and installed by Dubai-based distributor MediaCast.

Speaking about the install, M for Media’s Andre Aouad said: “I first heard about GB Labs from the creator of MIMIQ for Avid systems, who forwarded some information that he thought would interest me. It did, particularly because, at the time, we had no existing storage and it was rapidly becoming a problem because of the volume of work we were taking in. You can’t keep running back and forth with arms full of hard disks. It’s unproductive, and it was beginning to show. However, GB Labs soon came up with the ideal solution.”

The GB Labs FastNAS F-16 Nitro system installed at M for Media by MediaCast can be accessed by up to 10 users of Avid Media Composer, simultaneously if required.

GB Labs recently introduced even more acceleration for FastNAS storage systems with the introduction of new 25 GbE connectivity.

GB Labs CEO-CTO Dominic Harland added: “Ultimately, the engine of the newly 25 GbE-enabled FastNAS is our powerful CORE.4 OS, an ultra-high-performance operating system that serves media files with intelligence layers that deliver high stability and unparalleled quality of service. We are delighted to have been referred to M for Media by acknowledged experts, which is further evidence of our growing reputation for excellence.”

According to Aouad: “Recognising that we needed to make a change, we had made numerous enquiries for recommendations for a shared storage system and felt that GB Labs offered the best value and highest performance ratio versus any other solution on the market. Once we had taken the decision, we were up and running with FastNAS very quickly and the benefits we expected were almost instantly felt. We have had a very positive experience with FastNAS and are already looking forward to working with GB Labs on future projects.”

GB Labs to release brand new AI software - Telescope

GB Labs to release brand new AI software - Telescope

Telescope is deep learning, AI object recognition software that can be trained to find specific objects within media and film clips; not only making it easier for users to find the exact footage that they’re looking for but also potentially trigger automated tasks based on findings.

GB Labs’ noticed that although there were companies who had some form of Artificial Intelligence from image vs. image recognition, to up scaling or downscaling on the fly and from the range of AI on the market, there was nothing suitable that really helped the professional user. Typically, users would have a difficult and time-consuming process of encoding, uploading and downloading content.

Existing solutions are very much driven by consumer interest for things like product placement. For example, consumers may want to find a logo; however, in a professional market, users may want to find their logo that’s shown next to a star football player at a game; as well as the ability to search by multiple objects in the frame at any one time.

Telescope, which is completely scalable and can run in real-time across one or many streams; can be trained on real objects and even groups of objects so it will pull the search together all at once, rather than one thing at a time. When training Telescope, users will have a simple and straight forward experience. The end result is not only that users will own their data set, but they will then be able to search images, videos and stills, in order to find, down to the smallest detail, the exact piece of footage that they’re looking for; saving a lot of time and cost.

In addition to this, once you have pre-trained Telescope on the items you may want to search for and selected a specific object to find. For example; a logo, Telescope will find the clips with a confidence level of 0%-100% certainty that the object the user’s looking for can be found in that location.

"Currently editors have to manually eyeball and final check 100% of footage, whereas this "sifting" technology will bring that down to about 20%, saving the user 80% of their time and staffing costs during this operation or reallocating to other tasks within the business.” – Dominic Harland, Director, GB Labs.

GB Labs mark two years of FastNAS by introducing FastNAS NitroMAX

GB Labs mark two years of FastNAS by introducing FastNAS NitroMAX

GB Labs will be building on the success over the last two years of their FastNAS series by launching a brand-new product, FastNAS NitroMAX.

The intelligent storage company, who provide a comprehensive range of online, near line, backup and archive solutions for Media and Entertainment workflows, are excited to be announcing their latest product for their FastNAS range, FastNAS NitroMAX at IBC this September.

Marking two years since the launch of FastNAS, NitroMAX offers double the NVME acceleration layer in order to expedite more data simultaneously; now with 40GbE as standard for faster and more flexible connectivity.

Bringing, twice the capacity and twice the performance to the Nitro layer along with 40GbE as standard the new FastNAS NitroMAX is capable of up to 4GB/s read performance from its combined NVME and HDD technologies. However, it really wins in the real world with its ability to deliver around 2GB/s of read performance from its 1TB of NVMe accelerator whilst simultaneously allowing the spinning disks to accept over 2GB/s of write performance.

This is made possible using GB Labs’ unique technologies and intelligent algorithms for maximising real world missed IO data application. The end result means that users are gaining far more read streams whilst writing new data, supporting today’s modern, mixed environment workflows compared to existing shared storage technologies.

“The difference between non-GB Labs shared storage and the FastNAS F-16 NitroMAX is night and day in terms of real-world usable performance.” Viktor Spetnijs, Pre-Sales Consultant, GB Labs.
