GB Labs introduces brand new software to their FastNAS range, Mosaic – Piecing your assets together

GB Labs is launching its' newest Mosaic and FlashBack software to their FastNAS range, which will save users’ time and vastly enrich their browsing experience. Mosaic with FlashBack will be included free on all GB Labs’ FastNAS products ordered from IBC 2018, making it easier for users to search and see a quick preview of their video assets; finding their data much more easily.

In addition to this, Mosaic, which users may compare to a MAM, has the ability to scour through media file Metadata and make it accessible and therefore searchable for the users so they’re able to pin point what they’re looking for and Mosaic will automatically find it quickly and effectively –piecing your assets together.

In comparison, a traditional MAM can be costly and overkill for workflow requirements. Traditionally, a person is needed to review audio, images and video before manually categorising the data, which can be laborious and time-consuming. However, Mosaic can prompt for the addition of categorised tagging at the point of ingest; saving time and making it easier to find your assets at a later date. Moreover, the additional new feature of FlashBack is GB Labs' way of being able to preview the files instantly.

“We specialise in workflow, which is why our Mosaic gives you the tools to organise, index and find the files you need to complete media projects on time, to specification and on budget, without the additional (and typically unused) functionality of many extensive MAM.” – Ben Pearce, Director, GB Labs.

Eastern Kentucky purchases GB Labs FastNAS F-16 Nitro.

Aldermaston, UK - GB Labs, innovators of powerful and intelligent media storage solutions for media and entertainment workflows, today announced that the Office of Communications and Brand Management at Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, KY, has purchased GB Labs’ FastNAS F-16 Nitro media storage system.

The office provides a wide range of services for the university, including communication strategies for projects that track with the university’s strategic direction and institutional priorities. Among those services are brand identity; public relations; web services; video production; social media; advertising; graphic design; news and promotions.

Eastern Kentucky University Production Manager/Producer Leonard Nave said, “Each member of our video production team serves in a variety of roles to provide services that support all of those areas, and that means everyone, to varying degrees, writes, shoots, and edits. If we’re not leading a team on one video production project, we’re serving as crew on another.”

Prior to its assessment of GB Labs’ FastNAS F-16 Nitro, each member of the video production team used multiple hard drives, daisy-chained to their respective desktops, all linked to a NAS designated for backup/long-term storage. As the previous NAS was so painfully slow, users could often be seen running up and down hallways with hard drives under their arms to share footage.

Nave said, “Our ‘sneaker-net’ file sharing system was not only inefficient, it often led to the creation of multiple copies of the same videos; and a library that was never fully or accurately catalogued.

“We urgently needed a video storage solution that would house all video assets in one place, enabling our entire team to simultaneously use that repository as both source and destination for all video editing needs. We also wanted local redundancy and support for off- site backup, plus extended hardware and software support. We found all of that, and more, in GB Labs FastNAS and its Nitro boost technology.”

Nitro is GB Labs’ intelligent hybrid disk technology that delivers performance close to that of pure SSD, but at considerably less cost.

A particular point of interest to the university was the new CORE.4 operating system at the heart of FastNAS. CORE.4 is a high-performance, custom OS specifically designed to serve media files with an additional intelligence layer that delivers stability and quality of service for every user. CORE.4 includes power-saving intelligence that uses the least number of disks whilst ensuring consistent, reliable performance. Its range of features and elegant user interface are also engineered to further ease the management of online workflows.

One of the major benefits, and a key selling point for Eastern Kentucky University related to CORE.4, is its compatibility with GB Labs’ award-winning “Mosaic” automatic asset organiser.

Mosaic integrates with AI tagging systems to automatically scour all inbuilt metadata to not only provide highly logical and swift asset organisation, but the intuitive ability to very quickly find and retrieve those assets. As an additional benefit, when applied to the management of student directories, it greatly simplified those processes as well.

Nave concluded, “The combination of GB Labs’ performance guarantee, FastNAS, and CORE.4 with Mosaic made the decision to go with GB Labs a ‘no brainer’. We can now concentrate on doing the work assigned to us instead of constantly worrying about the state of our video assets. It’s one of the best and most economic storage archive media systems from a single manufacturer.”

GB Labs confirms NDI® integration

GB Labs confirms NDI® integration

Aldermaston, UK - GB Labs, innovators of powerful and intelligent storage solutions for the media and entertainment industries, has confirmed its formal adoption of NDI®, a brand of the Vizrt Group and the open-standard for IP-based production workflows for GB Labs’ range of high-speed, media-specific storage.

NDI-enabled CORE.4 OS is recognisable as a source by other NDI devices and systems that are connected to a standard Ethernet local area network. This vastly increases the number of video sources available for live production and, hence, the creative options.

With NDI, GB Labs integrates seamlessly with NewTek’s TriCaster® and VMC multi-camera video production systems. This enables production directors to draw from multiple sources at speeds of up to 18GB/s, which is believed to make GB Labs the fastest NAS on the market. Coupled with a feature-rich tool set built into its CORE.4 operating system, GB Labs is ideally configured to be the centrepiece of any contemporary IP workflow.

The NDI standard is bi-directional and backwards compatible with a large number of devices from manufacturers who already utilising NDI’s open protocol, which enables IP connectivity between devices.

“NDI answered the call of the broadcast industry, which had been shouting out for a consistent IP workflow standard,” said Duncan Beattie, Chief Product Officer of GB Labs. “We are delighted to be a part of the NDI ecosystem and look forward to ongoing work with NDI to further expand the benefits and potentials of innovative IP workflow solutions.”

“IP-based workflows are continuing to revolutionise video production,” said Michael Kornet, Vice President of NDI, a Vizrt Group brand. “GB Labs is highly respected within the industry, and with best-of-breed products like CORE.4 OS embracing NDI, their respective status as the most widely adopted IP standard, and the fastest NAS, on the market will continue to grow.”

NDI is available as a royalty free software developer kit (SDK) for any company looking to establish IP workflows within their organisation, or in production tools and systems they manufacture.

CORE.4 OS and other innovative storage solutions from GB Labs will feature in Hall 7 on Stand 7.B26 at IBC 2019, 13-17 September, in Amsterdam. The latest NDI developments will be featured on Stand 7.C12, also in Hall 7.

GB Labs win's IABM BaM Award for Mosaic

GB Labs win's IABM BaM Award for Mosaic

We were deeply honoured during the annual IABM BaM Awards® ceremony, which took place during NAB in Las Vegas in April, to receive a major award for our new Mosaic automatic asset organisation software.

It’s always gratifying to be recognised by your peers, but when the judging panel is comprised of no less than 40 industry experts, it’s even more satisfying. It’s meaningful not only because it is independently judged but because, as the IABM acronym suggests, the judging panel, organisation, and recognition are truly global.

The uninitiated might assume that Mosaic is some flavour of MAM, but it’s not, and doesn’t try to be and the judges clearly got that. For many, a full-blown MAM, particularly in relation to storage, is unnecessarily expensive and complicated. They got that, and Mosaic as a solution, too.

We arrived at the Mosaic solution because we looked at the problem from another angle. We knew there had to be a better way for storage users to track, tag, and retrieve what they needed, so we set about making that happen in a way that made actual sense. And a big part of that sensible approach was to, for the first time in the industry, couple intelligent storage with AI. That gave us, and the industry, an elegantly designed asset tracker and organiser that is a dynamic, highly enriched way to store, track, and quickly present relevant media assets.

That gave us, and the industry, an elegantly designed asset tracker and organiser that is a dynamic, highly enriched way to store, track, and quickly present relevant media assets.

It’s also very much worth mentioning that even though it didn’t win (this year) our InFlight-Data Acceleration (IDA) technology was also a finalist in another IABM BaM Awards category. The judging committee acknowledged IDA’s unique ability to simultaneously read/write and doing so in a way that is as sympathetic as possible to the media it is being read from or stored to.

This eliminates the multiple frustrations typically experienced when unexpected loads are placed on traditional storage systems.

Winning a BaM Award was a real highlight to a very successful NAB. And what is equally gratifying about not only having a great show but being a finalist for two BaM Awards and going home with one of them, is that it represents external validation of what we’re doing from people who know what they’re talking about. It acknowledges all of the hard work we invested in-house to create something as unique and genuinely useful as Mosaic, and its success is proof-positive that our team of seasoned, highly experienced in-house engineers and developers – along with the rest of our staff who are our bedrock support - truly understand real-world issues and, most importantly, how to resolve them.

Well done, everyone. Let’s win some more.

Dominic Harland, Chief Executive & Technology Officer

GB Labs to Highlight Benefits of Dynamic Bandwidth Control at IBC 2019

GB Labs to Highlight Benefits of Dynamic Bandwidth Control at IBC 2019

IBC 2019, 13-17 September, Stand 7.B26: Leaders in intelligent storage solutions, GB Labs will launch Dynamic Bandwidth Control, which enables GB Labs storage system clients to prioritise the use and capacity of available bandwidth.

Dynamic Bandwidth Control is an extremely valuable benefit only available in GB Labs storage systems.

Traditionally, client storage usage is capped at certain levels to reserve storage capacity for priority users, whether or not it is being used. Storage that is reserved but not used can unnecessarily restrict the performance of others who could make beneficial use of that extra capacity.

GB Labs resolved this problem by developing Dynamic Bandwidth Control, which swiftly identifies and selects high, medium, and low priority users and constantly evaluates and balances performance. This guarantees that not only is every user getting the full performance they need and expect, but that the entire system is operating at peak performance at all times.

Benefits Dynamic Bandwidth Control at IBC 2019

GB Labs CEO-CTO Dominic Harland said, “Dynamic Bandwidth Control is all about using the available storage until the usage priorities change, as they often do. This capability, unique to GB Labs storage systems, doesn't have to be scheduled. It can be implemented whenever it’s needed. The same applies whether storage is in use by entire workgroups or a single individual. If required, bandwidth usage can also be rearranged and managed on-the-fly.”

At IBC, GB Labs will also feature new, workflow-enhancing features for its SPACE, ECHO and VAULT (S.E.V) range, and introduce new CORE.4 and CORE.4 Lite operating system software for its S.E.V. and FastNAS ranges.

Two of the intelligent new features GB Labs will showcase at IBC include the Mosaic Automatic Asset Organiser, and the insightful Analytics Centre. Mosaic integrates with AI tagging systems to automatically scan inbuilt metadata, enabling users to quickly find what they’re looking for without having to manually enter metadata.

Analytics Centre provides a high degree of network visibility that shows - at a glance – precisely how data is being used, thereby providing a better understanding of individual or system-wide usage, including suggestions for optimisation.

The CORE.4 and CORE.4 Lite software is specifically designed to deliver reliable performance for every user by getting the best performance possible from the least amount of disks.
