Kaléo Video Case Study

Atreid presents the GB Labs solution at Kaléo

With Lucas Reboul: Managing Director at KALÉO

About Kaleo

Kaleo is a multimedia and audio-visual production company, specialising in exhibition scenography. We conduct immersive and interactive experiences with the use of AR and VR to promote culture and science. We work closely together with major museums both nationally, here in France, and internationally such as Cité de l'Espace in Toulouse, Musée des Confluences in Lyon, the MUCEM or the Olympic Museum in Lausanne. Recently, we delivered a major project in Madagascar with lots of immersive technologies. We are a team made up of a dozen employees specialising in the design of 2D, 3D, motion graphics, programming, and the latest audio visual and multimedia experiences.

The situation before purchasing with GB Labs

In the past we were using an Accusys server with a Tiger licence which allowed us to have secure storage shared on the network via Thunderbolt. It had some qualities but also some constraints with regards to maintenance and day-to-day operations.

What were the challenges?

There were quite a few challenges. Firstly, there was a need to have a driver on each of the machines and Thunderbolt connectivity. Also, an administration system organised around a Mac under a Windows license in order to manage connection sharing.

How were you managing these challenges before switching to GB Labs?

Before switching to GB Labs, we had to manage the workstations on a daily basis to check the compatibility of the OS with the drivers, which was very time-consuming maintenance wise.

Then, ATREID and GB Labs offered us a new solution based on 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity and the possibility of not needing drivers on the clients by connecting via the SMB protocol.

What made you choose GB Labs?

What made us choose GB Labs is that it is an all-in-one solution with exceptional performance, but it is also a solution with particularly easy maintenance due to the absence of client software.

Furthermore, given the way our premises are organised and with the 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, we’re now able to integrate new machines very easily and work remotely.

It particularly reduces interventions in terms of maintenance or machine settings for our graphic designers and our collaborators.

Would you recommend GB Labs to others?

This solution has been deployed at KALEO for a year now and therefore, we have the necessary hindsight to be able to confirm these advantages. We intervene a lot less with our graphic designers for the configuration of machines to access the servers and have very high performances. We can also access it via Wi-Fi using a specific setting set up by ATREID.

So it’s a particularly powerful and stable solution we’ve come to rely on, which allows us to operate efficiently.

What does the future hold for you? Any technical developments?

What we’re now interested in is the ability to integrate the cloud into our solution. We have a VPN that allows us to access the local server remotely, but we would like to increase this performance and be able to integrate services such as Google Drive or Dropbox.

When we work remotely like in Madagascar, we must access media that are on the central storage here in France. Having a solution that would allow us to work remotely on the media would be particularly interesting. We are working with GB Labs and ATREID on the integration of these new tools.
