This month GB Labs’ Matt Scott and Tim Harland, attended the annual GSCA Film Expo & Filmmaker Symposium, held in Los Angeles at the AMC CityWalk IMAX Theatre and Universal City Hilton hotel.

In addition to his day job at GB Labs, Matt is an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California (USC) school of Cinematic Arts, teaching filmmaking for Giant Screen and IMAX. He could not be prouder to have introduced 5 of his outstanding students, who were invited to present their short films and mission film pitches to the Giant Screen community.

The event is an important gathering for this filmmaking community, bringing filmmakers, distributors, donors, sponsors and intuitional theatres together to learn, exchange and grow as an industry.

Matt’s efforts to recruit and educate the next generation of giant screen filmmakers is critical to the long-term health of the industry, by injecting new voices into this scientific storytelling medium, who will be well positioned to create films, that connect with children who visit science centres in 10, 20 and 30 years from now.

At the Symposium trade fair, on the GB Labs booth, Matt and Tim introduced Giant Screen filmmakers to two of Matt’s students, who used GB Labs’ cloud solution, Nebula, to shoot their capstone project in Africa three weeks earlier, moving about 50GB of RAW footage daily back to Los Angeles over cell phone tethers.

In a new case study, these young filmmakers will talk about how Nebula’s ultra-secure and speedy ability to access post-production in the cloud from anywhere on earth, is a massively useful tool for filmmakers, who are known to work in the most remote corners of our planet. Even more impressive is how Nebula can manage this workflow on a documentary and student friendly budget.
